Building a Culture of Reliable Delivery
How we at Eirgen Pharma are building Operational Excellence as the foundation for trusted high-potency manufacturing, and future innovation.
Why Does Operational Excellence matter in high-potency manufacturing?
The medicines that matter most are often the hardest to make. High-potency APIs demand precision, containment control, process consistency, and regulatory rigour, leaving very little room for reactive management or operational instability.
When customers choose a CDMO in this space, they are not simply choosing manufacturing capacity. They are trusting a partner with their product, their patients, and their regulatory reputation.
At Eirgen Pharma, we have spent more than 20 years building deep expertise in high-potency manufacturing. We are a technically focused Irish CDMO with strong roots in complex formulation and commercial manufacturing, alongside a clear ambition: to be the partner customers choose when quality, reliability, responsiveness, and transparency matter most.
That is why Operational Excellence is so important to us.
Not as a standalone initiative or a collection of Lean tools, but as the operational infrastructure that allows reliable delivery at scale. Because in reality, strong technical capability alone is not enough.
Customers also need confidence in how a company operates:
● how problems are solved and surfaced
● how decisions are made
● how communication flows
● and how teams collaborate across functions
Operational Excellence is how we are strengthening those foundations across Eirgen, and it is also how we are preparing for the future.
Our ambition is to break ground in innovation. That starts with building the operational discipline, visibility, and ways of working that allow innovation to be fostered.
The Operational Excellence Journey at Eirgen
Like many pharmaceutical companies that grew through technical expertise first, Eirgen developed strong pockets of excellence early on. We had skilled people, strong quality practices, deep technical problem-solving capability, and close collaboration rooted in the production floor. Being smaller and agile allowed communication to happen quickly and naturally.
That worked extremely well. It helped us grow, but growth also creates complexity.
As Eirgen evolved, we recognised something many growing manufacturers experience, the technical capability scaled faster than some of the systems connecting the organisation.
Improvement was happening, but often locally rather than systematically. Teams were working hard, but not always with full cross-functional visibility or alignment. Important knowledge sometimes sat within functions instead of flowing across the business. We remained reliable, but not always with the level of consistency, predictability, and adaptability we wanted for both our teams and our customers.
Recognising that honesty was our first step on our Operational Excellence Journey.
Operational Excellence is built by refusing to settle for “okay.” It starts by understanding where the gaps are between where you are today and the organisation you want to become.
Today, our focus is on moving from reactive ways of working toward predictable, system-led delivery ,while building the operational foundations needed for long-term innovation and growth.
Reactive Local fixes. Firefighting. | Structured Systems forming. Rhythms taking hold. ⬆️ We are here | Predictable Stable flow. Strong governance. | Adaptive Consistently learning. Innovation focused and groundbreaking. |
Beyond Tools and Projects
One thing we have learned is that Operational Excellence cannot be built through tools alone.
Value stream maps, DMAIC projects, tier meetings, visual boards, and dashboards are all useful but tools by themselves do not create reliable operations.
Reliable operations come from having clear systems:
● clear ownership
● consistent communication
● structured escalation
● operational visibility
● and teams that solve problems together instead of in silos
At Eirgen, we are building both the structure and the behaviours underneath it. The tools give us consistency and a common language. The operating rhythms create alignment. Together, they help teams identify risks earlier, make decisions faster, and improve execution from one campaign to the next.
That matters operationally and it also matters strategically. Why? Because innovation struggles in reactive environments. If teams are constantly firefighting, managing unclear priorities, or solving the same issues over and over again there is very little space left for meaningful innovation. Strong operational infrastructure creates the stability that allows organisations to innovate more effectively, adapt faster, and scale new ideas with confidence.
The Capabilities We Are Building
Our Operational Excellence approach is focused on several connected areas that strengthen how the business operates as a whole.
Value Stream Thinking
We are improving our understanding of product and process flow end-to-end — from formulation through manufacturing, packing, and release. This helps us identify delays, bottlenecks, and handoff risks earlier, so problems can be solved systematically rather than locally.
Daily Management & Visibility
Structured communication rhythms, tier meetings, visual management, standardised reporting, and clear ownership help ensure that the right information reaches the right people at the right time. The goal is to reduce dependency on informal communication and create more consistent operational decision-making.
Continuous Improvement Capability
Our cross-functional Green Belt programme is building structured problem-solving capability across the organisation using DMAIC methodology applied to real operational challenges. Importantly, this is not about improvement sitting within one department. It is about building capability within the business itself and developing future operational leaders from within Eirgen.
Structured Reflection & Knowledge Sharing
We are building better ways to capture lessons learned, reflect on operational performance, and share knowledge across teams. What we learn from one campaign, one product, or one operational challenge should strengthen the wider organisation.
Digital & Data Enablement
We are introducing practical digital tools that improve visibility and support better operational decision-making. This includes operational dashboards and reporting tools that help teams identify trends earlier, prioritise actions more effectively, and respond faster when risks emerge. We are realistic about where we are on this journey. We are not claiming digital maturity beyond our current state. We are building capability deliberately where it creates genuine operational value.
Why This Matters in High-Potency Manufacturing
High-potency manufacturing demands a different level of operational discipline.
Containment requirements are exacting. Regulatory expectations are high. Small issues can quickly become significant operational or compliance risks if they are not identified and addressed early. That is why Operational Excellence is not a “nice to have” at Eirgen. It is part of the infrastructure required to manufacture reliably at scale.
Customers need confidence not only in technical capability, but in the systems surrounding it:
● confidence that issues will be surfaced early
● confidence that communication will be clear
● confidence that decisions will be made quickly and transparently
● and confidence that the organisation continuously improves how it operates
A CDMO can have excellent scientific capability and still create unnecessary risk through inconsistent communication, reactive planning, or weak operational alignment.
Our goal is to apply the same level of rigour to our molecules as we do to the way we communicate and work together.
Governance and Leadership Engagement
Operational Excellence without governance quickly becomes aspiration without accountability.
At Eirgen, improvement activity is embedded into our operational rhythm through structured review cycles, clear ownership, defined priorities, and active leadership engagement.
Cross-functional teams review operational performance together regularly. Improvement initiatives have named owners and timelines. Business review cycles create structured checkpoints where priorities are reassessed openly and decisions are made clearly. The objective is to keep decision-making close to the work while ensuring alignment across the organisation.
Importantly, leadership engagement is not about sponsoring a programme name. It is about actively shaping how the organisation operates every day. Thinking always of our customers at the centre.
Improvement in Practice
Operational Excellence only matters if it improves real operational outcomes.
Some examples of improvement work currently underway at Eirgen include:
Bottling Line Layout Redesign
Operations · Value Stream Improvement
A targeted redesign of a bottling line layout which was driven through direct observation and value stream analysis, improved throughput efficiency without requiring major capital investment. The improvement came from structured thinking, cross-functional collaboration, and challenging long-standing assumptions about how work had always been arranged.
Green Belt Projects: Waste Reduction & Small Batch Flexibility
Continuous Improvement · Customer Responsiveness
Current Green Belt projects are focused on reducing waste, improving operational flow, and increasing flexibility for smaller batch manufacturing. These initiatives are helping improve responsiveness to customer requirements while also building stronger internal problem-solving capability across the organisation.
What connects these examples is simple: improvement driven by people who understand the work, supported by clear methods, operational visibility, and shared ownership.
What This Means For Customers
Operational Excellence at Eirgen is a journey deepening seeded in us being truly honest about where we are at. We are on the cusp of excellence, but we will always strive for improvement. We have strong technical foundations, growing engagement across the organisation, and a clear direction for how we want to operate. At the same time, some capabilities are still maturing and continuing to evolve.
That honesty is our foundation. It reflects the kind of partner we want to be.
For customers considering Eirgen as a CDMO partner, our investment in Operational Excellence means:
Clearer communication
Structured operational rhythms support more consistent escalation, reporting, and cross-functional coordination.
Earlier problem identification
Operational visibility helps issues surface earlier, when they are easier, faster, and less costly to resolve.
More reliable delivery
Better alignment across functions reduces delays, planning gaps, and disconnects that can impact execution.
A partner that improves continuously
The systems we are building are designed to strengthen capability over time — helping Eirgen become more responsive, predictable, and scalable as we continue to grow.
Building the Foundations for What Comes Next
Operational Excellence at Eirgen is not about implementing isolated tools or running disconnected improvement projects. It is about building a company that operates reliably, communicates clearly, solves problems early, and improves continuously.
Most importantly, it is about building the operational infrastructure required for innovation.
The organisations that will lead the future of pharmaceutical manufacturing will not just be technically strong. They will be the organisations capable of learning quickly, adapting confidently, and scaling innovation.
That is what we are building at Eirgen.
